Motorcycle Accidents
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that more than 100,000 motorcyclists were killed in accidents occurring between 1966 and 2000.
In fact, motorcycle riders are over 30 times more likely to be killed in an accident than those driving a car or truck. More than half of all motorcycle accidents result from a collision with other vehicles. It is easy to understand how motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to injuries when they are involved in an accident as they have no physical protection (beyond a helmet) and no seatbelts for security. Also, motorcyclists may occasionally engage in risky behavior, such as speeding, traveling in between lanes to pass vehicles, and other activities that increase the likelihood of being involved in an accident. Even if you are an extremely cautious biker you are still in danger of being involved in a motorcycle crash.
Studies show that motorcycle accidents and fatalities have increased in Florida in recent years. There are many causes for motorcycle accidents and one of the primary causes is the driver not paying attention to the road. Even when the motorcyclist is paying close attention to the road and other drivers, he or she will be the one more likely to have serious injuries in the event of a crash.
If you have been involved in motorcycle accident, there are some key steps you should take:
- Â If there are injuries, seek medical attention immediately. You should move your car out of the road if possible, but remain at the scene of the accident. Turn on your hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic.
- Exchange contact and insurance information with other drivers, as well as with any witnesses.
- If there are injuries or property damage you should call the police and have an accident report filed.
- If you have a camera available or can use one from your cell phone, you should photograph the accident scene and both vehicles. This will be valuable information to have in processing your accident claim or in case of a lawsuit. Often people may find it difficult to recall specific details and photographs may help you to remember crucial information.
- Even if you do not think your injury is serious you should still consider being evaluated by a medical professional. Some injuries (especially neck and back pain) may not appear for days after the accident.
- Be sure to obtain the crash report case number or the Driver’s Exchange of Information form while at the scene of the crash. You should read the report carefully to ensure that the information is accurate.
